Entering the year of Horse, popularity of Korean stars at home (China) is rising tremendously. For those who haven't fall for the charm of the two-part drama, whether it be in cinema, long cell phone's 淘宝 website advertisements or in China VS Spain match, a Korean is invited as guest speakers, it is completely incomprehensible and unacceptable. It can be said that Lee Min HO and Kim Soo-hyun, are in fact, all within a short time, known as "OPPA long legs" and "alien Professor" representatives for both film and television Icon. Even if these two Icons don't make turn you into a love-struck fan, you will still be struck by all kinds of tidbits news about them. In fact those businesses and variety shows who look for these Icons, are just targeting on the popularity of these actors----that is, they are a bunch of opportunists. For commercials and variety shows, however the short production cycle, air time is also short project, to capture audience viewership using popularity is understandable. But for film and television projects, requiring several months of production cycles and inspection before releasing to the public, naturally they should not follow others seeking "popularity". The just completed filming of movie "Scent" which has chosen Park Si Hoo, who had faced career setback, to star in the movie, reflects a creative-oriented mindset.
Regardless of the popularity of an actor, to select only based on temperament and character of the actor that is closest to the character of the story. In recent years, Korean artists frequently appears in Chinese films, some say it's due to high Korean artist's popularity, some say because Korean artist looks good, some say it's because Korean artists are dedicated enough, some people say that is because Korea artist can make the film look international. In fact, I'd say, the primary consideration on using a Korean artist should be whether your story needs this artist due to his/her similar temperament to the story. Even if a good Idol has high popularity and good looks, but if he doesn't fit with the overall structure, it will make people sick. This method will may not ensure the completion of the film, but may arouse the enthusiasm of actors. When are you going to invite others with speculative mindset, naturally, it will be difficult to ensure people won't entertain you with monetary mindset.
Although for those who can see are not few, but for those with the courage to abandon the "fan box office" to focus on quality production team is scarce. For this point, the film "Scent" seems to be a little "ignorant fearless". Scent was based on the original novel of titled "Taste" and it is about a pair of long-distance love, originally the leading man is a Japanese, but while changing the script they accidentally revised to a warm Korean leading man. Not to mention how much changes has been made to the story, but to invite a Korean man to act before the start of filming is worth a discussion.
The "Scent" changed the "Taste" of Japanese Atsushi to Korean man Jiang Renjun, and hence Park Si Hoo became the first and only choice. Compared to Wang's other novels explore "Why love", the "Taste" is more suitable for young women (and even girls) pure love for reading. Park Si Hoo in the days of "Prosecutor Princess", cause a group of females in their 20-30s to develop "Seo In-Woo lovesick" syndrome, the group of females that happens to have the least resistance. Think of a carrier pigeon that travelled over oceans to accidentally fall into your hands came from the hands of Park Si Hoo, 70% per cent of the female audience falls into honeypot (mesmerized). Not to mention that the message that this pigeon carry----"finding real love". OMG! Won't the other 30% be breathless?
In the original story of "The Taste", the female protagonist, Julie, is a super woman writer who is able to produce two or three pages of stories upon waking up. In the movie "Scent", to capture the heart of a fashionable decadent woman, it has got to be a strong and mysterious man with stories. Isn't it? "Ice Prince", "cold man" and "playboys," "dark successor/inheritor", "ungracious man", "warm oppa" ... ... Park Si Hoo has acted in almost every of these roles, you can get the label. Look at him, he is unlikely to be stereotyped, he will not be restricted. He always bring a fresher feel. For example, I'll bet in the "Fragrance" pure love story, we will not see a shred of his cold eyes in "I was a murderer", and his creepy smiles. It's hard to imagine what kind of feeling will Chen Ran and him create, as there is language barrier in the communication in the "Aroma", the love between the two main characters is filled with uncertainty.
"Aroma" has three years worth of good script, is to give the national audience to judge the film, is not one of those "come ten days to say hello". Speculative and perfunctory attitude, naturally all are unpleasant. When other stars focus on "maintaining public image", Park Si Hoo started gearing up to expand into the overseas market. This is the big difference between wisdom and cleverness! The "Aroma" is his one year of accumulative hard work, and his calm challenge. In the current rage of "Long legs OPPA" and "alien Professor", the "Aroma" hand in hand with Park Si Hoo is like giving the "Popularity" theme a tragic head-on blow.
